RESOURCES, GIVEAWAYS & A CHANCE TO BE HEARD.
What is your favorite resource for Inspiration or Education? The greatest inspiration for me is watching older movies. Anything from It Happened One Night, 39 Steps, and Casablanca, to Blade Runner, Alien, and Taxi Driver. I like learning the history behind them, what were the pitfall and mistakes the directors and cinematographers made, or how they lit particular scenes. The relationships and blocking between the characters, specifically films from the late 1930s to the late 1950s, have given me ideas for poses, expression or engagement ideas. Whats it like being a writer for SLR Lounge? Writing for SLR Lounge is tough, but rewarding. You have to be part opinion-editorial journalist, part reporter, and part devil's advocate. Some days it is writing about a new lens or piece of equipment that came out, other days it is giving the realistic view of a new social media app or explaining a particular technique. It can be particularly exhausting keeping up with all the trends. I love the other writers. We talk everyday about trends, topics, industry or what is just going on in our daily lives, almost like a tight knit family. Whats the most exciting thing you're working on this year? There is one project I am working on for later this year. The project is a little beyond my purview so I have to approach it a bit differently than usual. I can't share any specifics as of yet, as I am trying to get the attention of a company that I want to work with. Whats the biggest risk you have taken in your career, and how did it pay off? One of the biggest risks that I have had to face is actually starting a business in general. I went to university for film because I didn't not want to make photography a career and I was afraid it would kill my passion. Over six years later and I have not made a short film since I graduated. I have full flung myself into the wedding photography scene. If you had to do it all over again, what would you do differently? If I had to do it all over again I would start by going to school for Business and Photography. There are so many thing that you don't know when starting a business or running one, if you have never done so, and mistakes can be costly. Some of the more successful photographers I know are great at running their business, but only deliver okay looking photos. Tell us about a challenge that you've overcome? One of the biggest challenges I have faced is the stigma other photographers had with the gear I used. I cut my teeth in wedding photography by second shooting for anyone who would allow me. Back when I started I used exclusively Fuji cameras. While this doesn't seem like a big deal now with the huge shift to mirrorless, I was turned away because of the particular camera I used, which is insane. I remember one phone call I had were the Lead explained that She loved my work, the colors and the moments, but didn't trust my camera. Another photographer told me that I would never be a professional with a crop sensor camera. I was forced to switch systems because photographers were X-Trans phobic. If you had access to unlimited funding and resources, how would you grow your business? If I had unlimited funding and resources I would open my own studio and have workshop with real world experience. Right now the business is just me and my wife, but I would eventually like to expand that to include a team of talented photographers who support each other. Not everyone can be great at everything, though some of us may try. My workshops would help build on the strengths and weakness of others. Maybe renting out a few local venues in the off season to teach how to deal with difficult lighting situations like dark barns or high dark ceilings. Advice for aspiring photographers or writers? My advice for aspiring photographers is to work with anyone you can and be respectful. The way everyone works, acts and hold them self is different. We all have different life experiences and have face different challenges. Some of the best advice that I have received came from people who I hated to work for. While I will never work those photographers again, I have adapted their advice to advance my career. Local photo communities are small and people talk. If you are working for someone else, it is not the time to promote yourself or act like a hotshot know-it-all, as no one will want to work with you. For the most part we are here to help each other, rising tides and all. www.justinheyes.comRead more from Justin at these links:

What is your background in Wedding Photography in Philadelphia?
Being from Kosovo, Europe I leaped into photography back in 2005. With a point and shoot camera and my parents garage as my “studio” I started taking portraits and editorial photographs. From there I started taking wedding photos as a hobby. I was fortunate to win the United States citizenship and decided to move here in 2009 and pursue photography as a career. How do you describe your style? If I had to label my photography, it would be a mix of journalism, editorial and fashion all blending together with a twist of pop vibrant colors to showcase a story. What projects or initiatives are you working on? Currently working on two things; Experimenting with the boundaries of wedding photography medium as we know it, and a personal project called “A day with you” Where can we see your work?
